Edo University is third best in Nigeria – Minister

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has advocated for more partnership with both local and international organisations for proper funding and new innovation in entrepreneurship for tertiary institutions particularly universities.
Mallam Adamu stated this in a paper Titled “Restructuring the Nigeria Tertiary Education System to Address the 21st Century Funding Challenges”, presented at the 2nd Founder’s day of the Edo University Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo state.
The minister who was represented by Prof. Jacob Ehiorobo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, university of Benin commended the university’s management for becoming 3rd best university  in Nigeria. He used the opportunity to call on Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund) to contribute to the developmental project of the university.
On his part, Prof. Shaibu A. Ibrahim, national president of Political Science Association of Nigeria and chairman Kogi State Local Government Service Commission presented a paper Titled “Political Engineering and the Dynamics of Change: the Nigeria Experience” , emphasized the importance of engineering in developing Nigerian economy.
The visitor and Edo State governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu pledged more support for the university from the state government.
He however commended the school management for effective management of the resources and congratulated them for the feat so far achieved within few years of its existence and also advised the students to be of good behavior
Edo University Iyamho is said to be the first and only Medical Training institutions in Nigeria with an Anatomage Table which has just been commissioned.
The Vice-chancellor, Edo University Iyamho, Engr. Prof. Emmanuel O. Aluyor made this known during the university’s 2nd Founder’s day at Iyamho in Etsako West Local Government Area.
He said that an Anatomage Table is the most technologically advanced anatomy visualization system in the world for anatomy education which has been adopted by many of the world’s leading medical schools.
Prof. Aluyor also disclosed that the University is one of 4 Medical Training institutions in Nigeria with power lab system for teaching Physiology and Pharmacology adding that the clinical skills laboratory when fully operational, will compete with other leading medical schools in the continent.
The V C equally disclosed that the university management has signed a memoranda of understanding for partnership with two foreign universities which are, Worcester State University, Massachusetts, USA and the University of Sunderland, UK.
This he said would afford some students of the institution the opportunity to spend between one or two years abroad in the students exchange programme to complete their training in approved program.
The VC said that the University has made history within its two years of existence having just been adjudged the best state owned university in Nigeria and 3rd out of 160 universities assessed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in the Open Educational Resources (OER) ranking recently.
“Achieving this feat just within two years of its existence further show that the vision of the university to become a centre of excellent in quality teaching, research, innovations and community development is being vigorously pursued in order to live up to its motto ‘Quality Education for Development”, he added.
He said that management realized that staff development is key to achieving academic excellence, has been sponsoring academic staff to local and international conferences and workshops as well as engaging in organizing training workshops for academic staff, pedagogy, research and other related issues.
As part of proactive measures, he said the authority has put in place proper channels of communication to resolve any issue that may seem to be disagreement either from the students or staff.
In order to avoid motorbike accident along the express way to Auchi for banking transaction, he said management in its wisdom negotiated with banks to construct Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in the university campus for the use by the students and staff.
In the same vain, management has approved medically qualified lecturers to always be on call at the sick bay to provide medical advice to staff and students adding that the arrangement is in the interim pending the completion of the teaching hospital which is in advance level.
Prof Aluyor however said that in the next few years the university will be turning out graduates who will be self-reliant and employers of labour based on their entrepreneurship training in the university.
