Court acquits Emirate Airlines, others of stealing $1.6m

A Nigerian court sitting at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos has discharged and acquitted a foreign airline, Emirates Airlines and 10 others in the alleged conspiracy and stealing of $1.630 million belonging to one Prince Ikem Orji.

The airline and other defendants in the case were alleged to have conspired and stolen four bags, one of which contained $1.630 million on December 19, 2007 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

Justice Mohammed Idris in his ruling held that the prosecution failed to prove its case against all the defendants beyond any reasonable doubt.

The judge described the conspiracy offence slammed on the defendants as a fairy tale, stating that there was no evidence suggesting such collusion.

The court further held that there was no evidence that any of the defendants was in Dubai at any time in order to have nexus with the missing bags.
