From today going on, the toga of ex-convicts will no longer be worn by the renowned nollywood actress, Funke Akindele and her husband, Abdulrasheed Bello, as the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has granted them state pardon after their non-custodial conviction and sentence by a Magistrate Court for violating Covid-19 lockdown protocols in Lagos State.

The governor also approved the release of 56 other inmates from various correctional Centres in the state.

A statement by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), said Sanwo-Olu acted based on the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, under the powers conferred on the Governor by Section 212 (1) & (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

The statement also said that the 56 released inmates were alsorecommended by the Advisory Council after due examination of their case files and consideration of the length of time served, the gravity of offence, old age and ill-health among other parameters.

The Attorney General therefore enjoined the beneficiaries to be of good behaviour as citizens and try to stay away from crimes.

The eight-member Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, headed by Dr. Abayomi Finnih, was inaugurated by Sanwo-Olu in December 2019.

Words on Marble:

If I can stop one heart from breaking,

I shall not live in vain;

If I can ease one life the aching,

Or cool one pain,

Or help one fainting Robin

Unto his nest again,

I shall not live in vain;  – Emily Dickinson, (American poet, 1830- 1886).
