A former Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Daniel Dant. Abutu has left his earthly cloak. He bade all who knew him while in the flesh as an active judge and on retirement, a final farewell on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Abutu’s passage into the Ethereal World was announced yesterday, Wednesday, June 4, 2025 by the Chief Registrar of the court, Mr. Suleiman Hassan, Esq, on behalf of the Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho and the entire court community.

The late CJ, while still bearing his professional insignia as “my lord”, served as the Head of the court between September 2009 and March 2011 as a committed Administrator who delivered justice to all manner of people while sitting as the number one judge of the court.

The Chief Registrar in his statement announcing the obituary said: “The Federal High Court regrets to announce the passing of our former Chief Judge, Honourable Justice D. D. Abutu, who served the court and the nation with distinction, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice”.

He also noted that all the divisions of the Federal High Court have been directed to display Abutu’s portrait.

This gesture, Hassan said is in honour of Abutu’s unprecedented legacy as the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

According to him, the portrait is expected to be displayed in areas that are dignifying and visible within the courthouses.

In addition, a condolence register is also expected to be opened at all divisions of the Federal High Court immediately.

“This will allow judges, staff and distinguished members of the Bar the opportunity to eulogise the late distinguished judge.

Hassan also stated that all information concerning Abutu’s funeral arrangements would be communicated through the appropriate channels in due time.

Justice Daniel Dant Abutu passed on June 3, 2025, at the age of 79 having been born on March 15, 1946, in Kogi State, Nigeria.

During his tenure in active service, he was widely respected for the following:

  • Legal Acumen: Demonstrated exceptional understanding and application of the law.
  • Fairness: Known for his impartiality and commitment to justice.
  • Dedication: Upholding the rule of law and serving the judiciary and nation with distinction.

After his retirement, Justice Abutu’s legacy continued to inspire his colleagues and the legal community.

His passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes, with the Federal High Court directing all its divisions to display his portrait in all dignified areas of the court.

The court has also opened condolence registers to allow judges, staff, members of the Bench and Bar, and the general public to pay their last respects.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be disclosed by both the family and the court.
